Member of the WaKe research group of the Department of Computer Languages and Systems of the University of Alicante. He has been deputy director of Computer Engineering at the Polytechnic School and coordinator of the Telefónica Chair of the University of Alicante on “Use and Applications of Big Data”. His lines of research focus on open data management, data integration and business intelligence in Big Data scenarios and the design of data-intensive Web applications. In addition, he has participated in R&D projects on smart destinations and smart cities with special emphasis on open data management. He has published his research in international journals such as Decision Support Systems, Information Sciences, Data & Knowledge Engineering, ACM Transaction on the Web or Current Issues in Tourism. He has taught courses and workshops on the concept of reuse of public sector information and the opportunities that open data ecosystems provide for a city. He was also part of the team that developed the open data and transparency project of the University of Alicante, including its open data portal.

Director of the Official School of Tourism (2002-2007) and of the University Institute for Tourism Research (2007-2015), a multidisciplinary tourism research centre in which he currently coordinates the inter-university PhD Programme in Tourism, together with the Universities of Malaga, Sevilla and Rey Juan Carlos. His research career, spanning almost four decades, focuses on the analysis and planning of tourism and the territorial dimension of this activity. He specialises in the planning of tourist destinations and the management of coastal tourist areas and is the author of more than a hundred books and book chapters, as well as articles in scientific journals of major impact on this subject.  He has participated as an expert in national and international plans and projects on tourism development planning for the World Tourism Organisation (WTO), as well as co-authoring books published by this organisation for local managers. In terms of training, he has contributed to the consolidation of tourism studies in Spanish universities, participating in the development of curriculum guidelines and has directed, for more than 20 years, a master’s degree in the subject that is a benchmark for Spain and Latin America.

Member of the research group Planning and Sustainable Management in Tourism of the University of Alicante and part time professor at the Department of Regional Geographical Analysis and Physical Geography of the University of Alicante.
His professional career in the field of tourism dates back to 2000, when he began his participation in various research projects developed at the University of Alicante. In the same way, he has been a senior research technician in three successive projects of the National R&D&I Plan, carried out within the University Institute for Tourism Research (IUIT) of the University of Alicante, obtained through competitive processes. As a result of this research work, he accredits a scientific production with publications in journals indexed in the Journal Citation Report (JCR) and SCOPUS. He is currently actively collaborating with different national and international groups to obtain European projects and funds within the framework of H2020. He is also publishing several articles in high impact journals (JCR) related to ICT and its influence on tourism.
